About Countersteer

Built by riders who remember their first lesson

We started in 2011 with two training bikes, a borrowed parking lot and one simple idea: nobody should be rushed through learning to ride.

Our story

Confidence comes from practice, not pressure.

Back then, most riding schools squeezed beginners into big groups and sent them home after a single day, nervous and unsure. We thought there was a better way: small groups, patient coaching and as much practice as each rider needs.

Today we teach on a private training ground and the roads around it, with a fleet of well-kept training bikes and a team of instructors who still ride every week. More than 4,800 riders later, the idea hasn't changed.

Where you train

A private training ground

Our closed site gives you space to learn with no traffic at all. You only head out onto public roads once you and your instructor agree you are ready.

  • 01

    Braking straight

A long, flat run to practice smooth stops and the emergency stop at real speed.

  • 02

    Slow-control course

Tight cone layouts for U-turns, figure eights and walking-pace balance.

  • 03

    Cornering loop

A sweeping circuit where you link gears, braking and your first proper bends.

How we teach

Four promises to every rider

  • 01

    Calm, never rushed

Nerves are normal. We move at your pace and only add the next skill when the last one feels easy.

  • 02

    Real roads, real conditions

Once you are ready, we ride the roads you will actually use, in the weather you will actually get.

  • 03

    Coaches, not examiners

Our job is to build skill and confidence. Every correction comes with the why behind it.

  • 04

    Safety you can feel

Daily bike checks, quality protective gear and small groups mean you can focus on riding.

The team

Meet your instructors

Every instructor rides year-round, coaches full time and has a soft spot for nervous beginners.

  • Head instructor and co-founder

    Maya Okafor

    • 19 years riding
    • First-time riders

Maya co-founded Countersteer after years of watching nervous beginners get rushed through lessons elsewhere. She is calm, precise and brilliant at turning nerves into focus.

  • Road and advanced coach

    Daniel Reyes

    • 22 years riding
    • Road craft and cornering

A former motorcycle courier who spent a decade in heavy city traffic, Daniel teaches riders to read the road far ahead and stay one step in front of everyone else.

  • Off-road lead

    Lena Hartmann

    • 15 years riding
    • Trail and loose surfaces

Lena grew up racing enduro and still spends most weekends in the dirt. Her sessions build the balance and throttle control that make riders smoother on the street too.

  • Test preparation coach

    Sam Whitlock

    • 12 years riding
    • License test preparation

Sam has prepared hundreds of riders for their test. He breaks every maneuver into small, repeatable steps until it feels completely automatic.
